Summary:

We are delighted to welcome Mr. Masaki Bessho, Head of Fintech Center, Bank of Japan (“BOJ”) who will be speaking to us about BOJ’s works on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). 

Mr. Bessho will speak about issues including, but not limited to, the following:

  • The BOJ has been working on CBDC so that they should be ready for issuing CBDC when necessary in the future.
  • Proof-of-concept experiment, consisting of actual machine testing and desk-top verifications which started in 2021.
  • BOJ will continue to engage stakeholders, providing them with timely updates, and seek their valuable feedback.

Mr. Masaki Bessho

Mr. Bessho is Head of Fintech Center, Bank of Japan, since September 2021, after serving as Associate Director-General of Payment and Settlement Systems Department, Deputy Chief Representative for Europe, and Head of Financial Infrastructure Studies Division. He has represented the Bank in a number of digital currency/Fintech related forums including the group of central banks, and the Bank for International Settlements, to explore CBDC. He received an LL.M. from the University of Virginia (1999) and an LL.B. from Kyoto University (1994). He is admitted to practice law in the State of New York.
