Professor Matsuo will discuss fundamental principles of the Banking Act which governs business of foreign bank branches licensed in Japan. He will also touch upon recent regulatory changes that affect foreign banks.

This workshop is organized by the University of Tokyo, Program on Global Securities Market Law. The program is led by Professor Hideki Kanda and Professor Hiroyuki Kansaku of the University of Tokyo and supported by Visiting Professors (Mr. Matsuo of Nishimura & Asahi and Mr. Osaki of Nomura Research Institute).

Professor Matsuo is a prominent lawyer in the field of finance and capital markets. At the FSA, he was the Director in charge of drafting the bill to enact the FIEA and its related regulations. At Nishimura & Asahi, he advises clients on M&A, compliance, banking, capital markets and various other business areas. He also teaches the FIEA at the Graduate School of Law, the University of Tokyo. He is an alumnus of the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law and Harvard Law School.
